The Dycks Visit: Day 1

do you have friends that you’ve known for a long time and you’ve lived some really important stuff in life with them and you (or they) moved away and when it first happened it hurt like crazy? for me, that would be my friend Carrilee and her husband, Tim. Dave and Tim have known each other since high school and they went to the same college in east Texas but they didn’t really become friends or hang out together until they graduated and worked for the same employer right out of college. when Dave and I were still dating (meaning we weren’t engaged yet…. or maybe we were newly engaged), I met Tim and Carrilee for the first time on a TRIPLE date… and it didn’t go well. I shouldn’t say that. I just never got a chance to talk because the third female dominated the conversation (which was all about wedding details because she and Carrilee were getting married on the SAME DAY – one in Texas and one in Washington).

but anyway…. after dinner, the THIRD couple opted out of movie night in Canada (it used to be cheaper to go to the movies in Cananda, it took the same amount of time, even with border traffic and waits, AND the theater was so much better) so Carrilee and I ended up in the back seat while the boys were up front and we clicked AMAZINGLY well almost instantly. that night was the start to an amazing friendship – the only friendship i’ve ever really had where i felt like i had a sister. and we’ve been through it all together over these last 13+ years – weddings, jobs, painting/decorating a new house, newlywed days, double dates, a parent dying, pregnancy, babies, moving, and so much more. we attended the same church and knew all the same people but each had our own lives. our own other friends. but no matter what happened, she was always there for me. we always clicked and connected and it has just worked. she’s been an unexpected, amazing gift from God’s in my adult life. and now, for the first time, she’s here in Arizona to see our “new life.”

Yesterday at 2:40pm, the kids and I were ELATED to swing by the local airport in Mesa to WELCOME some of our dearest friends in the world to our new home. This fabulous family of SIX flew in from Lynden to spend 6 glorious days with us. Yesterday was really only half of a day, but we packed a lot of pool time into those few hours….

as you can tell, i’m LOVING my new camera case (by Lifeproof) that allows me to take my iPhone UNDERWATER for photos and videos! i’m still getting the hang of it, but it’s been a blast.. my favorite thing is to see bubbles coming out of mouths and noses (usually mine)!

we enjoyed a yummy dinner of shredded beef tacos (we had all SEVEN kiddos eat outside while the adults enjoyed some peaceful dining inside) before swimming again with the dads and the lights and the tiki torches….

Carrilee put Abby to bed right around 8…. then Jorja and Albert and our Alex went down. Carrilee and I ran out to Dollar Tree and Walmart for a few essentials and let the dads handle the other kids (it was already 8:40 by the time we left the house last night) and when we got home around 9:30, FIVE of the kiddos were still awake.

best behaved kiddos award for bedtime routine goes to ABBY and ALEX. then again, it’s the first time our kiddos have ever had a sleep over in our home…. how fun that everyone gets to share their room with at least one member of the other family!!

maybe i’ll pull out the good camera today for some better photos…..

but in the end, good camera or iPhone, this is still one of my all time, favorite photos EVER of Carrilee and I:
